Norway Rats
Norway rats prefer to stay close to the ground, burrowing around your home’s foundation or in basements. While they might seem harmless at first, their underground activity can quickly lead to major structural issues as they chew through wiring and other materials.
House Mice
House mice are small but mighty. These little guys can squeeze through gaps as tiny as a pencil, which means anywhere in your home can fall victim to a house mouse infestation. Once they’re in, they’re looking for food, making a mess, and leaving droppings around. They reproduce quickly, so a couple of mice can turn into a full-blown infestation before you know it.
North American Deer Mouse
Deer mice are small, quick, and a real problem if they find their way inside. They prefer undisturbed spaces like attics, basements, and storage areas, where they build nests and stash food. The bigger concern is the health risk they bring. Deer mice are known carriers of hantavirus, which can spread through their droppings and urine.
White-Footed Mouse
White-footed mice are common invaders, especially when temperatures drop. They look similar to deer mice but bring their own set of problems. These rodents chew through insulation, wires, and household materials, creating potential fire hazards and costly repairs. They can also carry ticks that spread Lyme disease. Sealing up entry points and keeping storage areas tidy can help keep them away
- Droppings: Rodent feces are small, dark pellets, often located near food storage areas, along baseboards, or in hidden corners. The size and shape depend on the rodent indoors, but they all generally have the same curved appearance.
- Chew Marks: Rodents love to chew and aren’t picky about what they gnaw on. You might notice damage to wires, wood, food packaging, or anything they can sink their teeth into.
- Unusual Noises: Rodents are most active at night, so if you hear scratching, rustling, or scurrying noises coming from your walls or ceilings, it’s a red flag.
- Nests: These pests prefer to create nests out of shredded materials like paper, fabric, or insulation. They’ll tuck these little hideaways into hidden corners, behind appliances, or any spot that provides them a cozy place to rest and reproduce.
- Odors: A strong, musky odor is another sign of rodent activity. If you detect an unusual smell that lingers, especially in areas where you’ve already noticed other signs, it could mean you’re dealing with a more serious infestation.
